This is from Canon Rumors:

I dunno, that tier is already a pretty tight squeeze between the budget 1x00D and 'enthusiast' x0D

My guess is those are two prototypes currently tested by Canon to determine which will become the 750D.

24MP:  both Canon and Nikon have been known to put lower MP count sensors in higher end cameras in order to get better performance.   I.e. D4 vs D800, or 1Dx vs 5DIII.   Also Rebel target customers are more likely to be impressed by the MP count than those who want the performance offered by higher tier bodies.

Canon has been moving rather cautiously, avoiding large expenses in manufacturing - a smart strategy in these lean times.  Would they splurge on a new sensor line?   Maybe, if this sensor is also to go into 80D and their next mirrorless body.
