I’ve done some experimentation along those lines… and I have discovered there are other variables that appear more important than F stop in this context. For example, Oly lens ability to get so close to the subject has a huge impact on the final image. You have less background, it’s easy to position the camera in such a way to find a smooth (and perhaps more distant) background, all of which can affect the final appearance of separation, never mind the optical formulas for DOF. During my experimentation last weekend in and around the house, I found that the ability to get the lens so close to the subject matter was far more important in achieving the desired image than F stop to DOF ratios. In fact, I cannot think of a single instance where the OPTION of getting close to the subject would be a disadvantage for this type of photography. But I can think of many disadvantages of using a lens that REQUIRES greater distance to the subject.
