From what I have gathered by researching ISO and sensor size. ISO is the gain the electronic circuits apply to the signal from the sensor in order to give the proper exposure value. The argument is, if a larger sensor has 4 times the area it's 2 stops brighter so the smaller sensor has to have the signal boosted more in order to give the same signal level to overcome the noise of the electronic processing circuits.  When you amplify the signal you amplify the noise generated by the sensor also.  Small sensors are inherently more efficient in gathering light and the make and design of the sensors and various other factors come into play in circuit design so there is some controversy if the ISO has to be increased by 2 stops or 1.5 or even 1.   I am very interested to see the results of this test.
