For instance, instead of a big, expensive 300mm/f4 (which many, including me, would never buy), a 250mm/f4.8 of the same high quality would be wonderful

I wonder if its a case of the manufactures { all of them ! } not wanting to risk the sale of a high end fast aperture lens to people interested in long tele work. I simply do not use it enough to justify the size,weight and cost , whereas a smaller slower but still optically decent lens would be far more attractive.

or maybe the case is that manufacturers don't care that much about selling their monster top of the line lenses: they just use them as a prestige point to sell less extreme lenses ...
