*G5X*- My short list
Jan 16, 2015
So we know the G16 is due a replacement; lets pretend I were given free reign to design the successor. I figure the G5X is the next name since we have the G1X and G7X taken... G3X just doesn't sound feasible. Of course the overall design would be very much rangefinder like, closer to how the G10 looked as possible- basically a robust, well proportioned rangefinder digital companion.
So that said, this would be my list of must haves:
20.2mp 1" size sensor w/5 axis IS
No AA filter
3" Glass Covered LCD screen (fixed)
24-140mm f2/2.8-4 Lens (threaded front element)
ISO 50-12,800 range
Built in ND Filter
Multi Control ring with click/clickless switch option (for smooth quiet operation and, aperture steps)
2.36 Million dot EVF/Improved OVF w/clear lcd overlay information and parallax correction
3 Adjustable Dials on top (back to g10/11/12 style), one on rear (current configuration)
1 DSLR style front dial (like G12/15/16)
2 Customizable buttons (video button and shortcut button)
Fixed Flash unit (as opposed to pop up style)
Full metal construction, slightly larger body than G16, smaller than G1X
Wifi/wifi support (card)
Full featured intervalometer and in camera time lapse movie making options
Top of the line video and manual controls over video
Full control over all Jpeg output, and a full NR off setting available at all ISO's
Top plate LED light indicators back on controls (just like g10/11/12)
Some level of weather resistance is optional
To me, it obvious that cameras like the LX100 and G series cameras have extreme appeal to enthusiasts and other photographers of all kinds. Nothing is directly challenging the LX100 in this space, and Canon has the expertise and tools to get this list done easily. I think the G1X cameras weren't the best Canon can do by far, and the G7X fits a different space altogether.
Rangefinder styled cameras done right, have been Canon's forte- time for the next step. I think the market would eat this up.
