I have seen this.  A few years ago, we had one who perched on the very, very top of a tree in the park next to me.  It seem like he used to stay though the winter.  I saw him for about five years and then two years ago-no more.

Alternately, if you take the feeder down for a few days, he may alter his territory to include a different food source, so when you put it back up, you might see more than just the one bird.
