Focus is critical for hummingbirds, they are small and the depth of field will be very shallow.

I find that 1/1000 is okay if they are stationary feeding, 1/1250 generally fine for movement between flowers.

Most people suggest a 25% sugar water solution. They prefer higher concentrations, but research indicates they will come to the feeder less frequently with higher concentrations of sugar (they need fewer trips to get the required calories). Also bring water to a boil to kill any bacteria and then add sugar.

I prefer to photograph them flying in the garden rather than at the feeder. The feeder is available, but they generally prefer the flowers.
