USM motor kaput after 18 months on 24-70mm f2.8L II

Being a first time Canon owner, I'm interested to know if mine is an isolated case or not. I use a 24-70mm f2.8L II USM on a 5D MKIII. Recently, the auto-focus consistency has really sucked. Sometimes it gets it right, more often it's way off. My eyeball mk-i and a lensalign confirmed this, as did a couple of hundred shots using both FoCal and FocusTune to assess auto focus consistency, which was all over the map.

I took it to the repair shop who tell me that the USM motor is finished and needs replacing for a total cost of £250 / $400. For a lens that costs what this one did to need a new USM motor after only 18 months and a couple of thousand exposures shocks me.

Anyone else had a similar experience?
