Re: AF tracking questions

Thanks for the Wikipedia link - I’d like to understand if there is some inherent advantage in AF tracking in the cameras with mirrors vs the mirrorless types like the NX1.
Until your post I was unaware the multi area AF squares (the manual refers to them as rectangles?) could be moved around. I’m still not sure how that works, but if it can be confined to an area of the viewfinder we set (I think the GH4 offers something like this), then it may work like the AF system in the fast Nikons, which I am used to, and which I know work well. The NX1 certainly seems to acquire (and lose) focus almost instantaneously, so if you can keep the subject within the prescribed area, it should focus on the leading area of contrast, which should be the face, a high percentage of the time. When using the multi area setting I have thought being able to limit it to (for example) the center third of the viewfinder, and in height to the top half or top 60% of that third could offer an advantage, particularly when tracking a single subject. If this downpour ever abates I’ll trundle out into the sea of mud that was once grass and try this.
I’m with you on the touch screen thing. I can’t imagine trying to hold the camera out in front of me with one hand while poking at the screen with a finger on the other hand. I really want to look through a viewfinder and have the extra support of the camera against my face.
As an aside, these are the kinds of discussions that are really helpful. People sharing discoveries and experiences others can use or build upon. So, thank you!
Hi Bill,
I believe you have to set it to C-AF and then you can press OK and adjust the Multi AF range.
