GPS Elevation calculations are at a disadvantage compared to Lat and Lon - due to the geometry of the satellites and the GPS receiver. I use a very accurate hand-held GPS receiver that can usually pinpoint my horizontal position to within a few meters, but the elevation varies wildly.

Thanks for the answer. That's what I thought, the satellites are way up there so the angle is poor for detecting elevation.

I guess a pressure-based altimeter is more accurate, especially if calibrated for a known elevation, until the weather changes.

My hand-held GPSr contains a barometric sensor, but it's used to just to "smooth" out the GPS elevation fluctuations -- resulting in a pretty accurate elevation track.  It can also be calibrated to a known elevation.
