G12 vs G16
Jan 9, 2015
Hi fellow photographers
Being only my second time posting here in a dpreview-forum, it is Again about my, maybe, endless search for a camera to replace my G12 ...which unfortunately now have a small scratch on the front lens !! ... but in many other aspects still is the best semi-compact camera ever made ...and obviously very hard to find a replacement for. So in my search I bought, Again !!, a G16 because I thought that I maybe got my self a "poor/bad/not so good" copy the first time I tried it out a couple of month ago - But I was dissapointed ...Again !!! Landscapes and Buildings caught at wideangle and flowers and insects caught at macro is what I do most. So good image quality at wideangle is a number one priority. Though the weather was not that inviting earlier today here in Helsingor (Denmark) I took my G12 and my new G16 out for a quick and simpel test. Both cameras set to ISO 80 - Aperture 4 - and shot at 1/40 of a second at the widest angle. The crops you see here is unaltered and a piece of first the G12 lefthandside and the G16 lefthandside and then the righthandside of the G12 and the G16.

.... the best I can say about the G16 and it´s 12Megapixel sensor and lens, is that is has less barrel distortion ... BUT my G12 clearly wins when it comes to sharpnes. Sure the G16 is a lot quicker and sure has it´s pro´s ...but I guess it´s going back to the store where I bought it. I was one of those who hoped for the rumour of an opcomming G17 ... !! Happy weekend - Jesper
