Idk how the chip works either. But, on Nikon bodies, the chip enables additiional shooting modes as well as signaling focus confirmation (light goes on) in the viewfinder when you have sharply focused manually. It's worth the extra $40 or so. With or without the chip, stopping the lens down to f8 or so and setting hyperfocal distance for DOF should maximize chances for sharp landscapes.

A Nikon camera requires no chip or electrical connection on the lens to activate the focus confirmation feature. Focus confirmation is generated entirely within the camera body.
