Rebel SL1 Settings for a starry night sky?

My Christmas gift to me was a 50mm f1.8 lens and a Rebel SL1!

I've seen photos where you can clearly see the milky way hovering over a mountain or a lake. One of the biggest reasons I bought the 50mm is so I can capture low light images like that. Unfortunately, after paging through the SL1 manual four times for an hour and a half, I'm not sure what settings would be the best to use to get the kind of image I'm looking for. I have a remote, and a tripod, and I know I'm going to need the shutter to stay open a while, but I don't know what settings to select to get the best color from the terrain and the stars at the same time. Can someone walk me through the SL1 menu settings I should use to get these kinds of pictures?

I almost forgot to mention.  I am pretty adept at using Photoshop (CS6) to edit the images later and pull up the colors.  I just don't know what needs to be done in camera.
