Dissapointing
Bought this back in August 2014. We are very outdoors people and need a rugged and waterproof point and shoot. Lots of snorkeling. Lots of mountain hiking. So with the waterproof capability, GPS, compass and altimeter I thought this was the perfect answer to all my needs. Picture detail is very good. You must use the Vivid setting to get the best color and set the resolution to 16M to get the best picture quality. Video is OK as it records HD .mov files. I set them to 720p and they seem OK. There are many problems with this camera. Focus in video record mode is poor. It will go in and out of focus as you are shooting. I have tried all focus modes with Spot focus seeming to have the least difficulties. The compass is absolutely useless. It will not point north and there seems to be no way to calibrate it. I have contacted Olympus to ask about this. No response. The altimeter is not accurate. I calibrate it and then when I check the calibration later after a hike, it is out. So, cannot seem to trust it . Recently we were in Hawaii. The camera worked for my snorkeling videos and pictures. It seemed watertight however on two occasions a fog or mist developed inside the lens which blurred the pictures. It did eventually clear but I am wondering what the internal moisture will do to the camera in the long run. Also when you use the telephoto zoom while recording a video you hear the motor whirring VERY LOUDLY on the recorded video. So these problems have me very disappointed with this camera and unless you can put up with these issues I would not recommend this camera. There are some very good features I really like but these problems I described do take away from its intended use and make me feel like I have to look around for another. A lot of really nice, exciting features but too bad they don't work properly.
