SL1 (100D) proximity sensor problem

I brought my SL1 2 months ago and is generally happy with it.  However, I encountered 1 problem - occasionally, the on-screen display and photo review would not come up.  I.e. I get a blank screen.  However, I can review photos and bring out the menu.  I started googling the problem.  Long story short, the proximity sensor (the rectangle thingy between the hotshoe and the viewfinder) is overly sensitive.  If the viewfinder rubber eyepiece is even slightly up, the sensor would think My eye in on the viewfinder and turn off the screen.  This is very annoying.

The biggest problem is that I purchased one of those silicon rubber skin cover for this camera and the hole made for the sensor isn't nearly big enough.  In fact, I cut the hole to be twice the size of the sensor and it still not working.   In experimenting, I find that I can put my finger about a centimeter from it in any direction (not just in front of the sensor) and the screen will turn off.

Before I do major operation on my rubber skin, is there a way to turn off this sensor?  I don't mind having the screen menu always turned on.
