I checked again and you are correct. Live View Boost on both the E-M1 and E-M5 *does* boost LV up to +3 EC in darkness. So either I checked wrong in the past or it was changed with some firmware update, because I am pretty sure it stays at +-0 EC when I checked.

Anyway, this is a good thing and indeed helps to focus manually in such low light where AF already gives up. More so on the E-M1, because the E-M5 really gets black while the E-M1 still shows lots of useful detail.

Keep in mind, though, that Live View Boost is achieved by a combination of digital curves and slowing down the refresh-rate when the latter is set to "Normal". Using "High" refresh-rate again protects against the additional lag, but in return cannot boost LV so much.

thanks for confirming that Timur, I have sufficient respect for your input its always nice to know that I wasn't getting confused in my old age

Your other points are indeed worth noting but I am now finding that for dark shooting I prefer my EM-1 EVF over the OVF of my now sold 5Dmk2

One other thing to remember of course is that its essential to keep an eye on the exposure meter / histogram, several people I have introduced to this use of Live View Boost when shooting in low light have forgotten it doesn't reproduce the exposure effects in the EVF and been very confused 3hen what they saw in the EVF wasn't reproduced in the final image file

So much to learn, so little time left to do it!
