Hi guys,
I have the K3 and love it and have have started to do some more wildlife recently since I bought a Sigma 50-500mm screw drive lens S/H, it's an OK lens but at the long end end it's sharpness is just adequate but no more. I crave for one of the new 150-600mm zooms for the extra length and better sharpness.
Many/most of the Sigma/Tamron lenses are being neglected from having the Pentax mount, they promise a new telephoto zoom, but when, and how much it will be is another question, judging from there recent releases it will be twice the price of the Tamron when it finally hit's the shelves.
So I spotted on a French ebay, a Nikon D7100 just over a year old with less than a hundred shots on it, with the 18-105 VR 3.5/5.6 general zoom for £539/690 euros with card hand strap and camera bag, so I went for it, it's as new!
Comments on the D7100 so far; firstly, as others have said it doesn't feel as good as the K3 in the hand, it's bulkier and it's not as well built either, the controls don't fall so well and some are just badly positioned and the menus are too sub-menu divided. But, I tried the 3D AF and it is amazing to watch the focus point following a running child following perfectly and with a very large AF screen coverage, in that department it's in a different league. The zoom that came with it is disappointing, average sharpness and a bit decentered (Sigma/Tamron/Nikon/ Pentax etc... they are all at it!) All for £60 less than just the new Pentax DA 16-85mm.
Would I leave Pentax for Nikon? , well NO.... Pentax K3 feels like a rock as opposed to plasticy and the controls are where they should be, I seem to have to crook my fingers to hold the Nikon ... I'll probably adapt,...... but for long focal length zooms there's not much there for Pentax!
Edit: AF adjustment has helped the lenses sharpness.
