I have replaced many broken UV filters when I used to work for the photographic section for a newspaper. I NEVER had to replace a front element. Also it's OK to clean a front element as some have said, but you can't remove scratches or blemishes, however you can replace a filter. Always use a lens hood. If you ever get better lenses then a filter is a must. It can be quite expensive to replace a front element. I was a camera technician for many years.

I've been pretty fortunate over the years (decades actually). No serious drops, bumps, or collisions (yet).

I still prefer to squeeze every bit of IQ out of my optics as possible (sans protective filter), and then if I happen to damage a lens, just get it repaired and get 100% out of it again. I pay too darn much money for lenses to hobble them right away with a filter (even one of my B+W MRCs, which I grudgingly have used in extreme cases).
