Re: 24 or 25 into 60 doesn't go
I still have my GH4 and am learning to minimise the 25fps strobing/flickering (same issue with 24fps).
The camera's rear monitor and EVF run at 30fps (or 60fps), it is impossible to display 25fps cleanly at 30fps, 'skipping and jumping' is required. The EVF for some reason looks really really bad, I struggle to use it at 25fps, so even though the rear monitor also judders it's the only option.
This really pains me - that I cannot use the EVF, it's a real shame Panasonic could not get the EVF to be usable at 24/25fps. A 24/25fps refresh rather than 30fps on the EVF and rear monitor would help.
When displayed on an external monitor/TV the results I now think are comparable to other cameras running 25fps. Blackmagic footage I also see juddering. In part this is due to the nature of LCD displays rather than the footage. High contrast areas, panning tree branches against a bright sky, will flicker - possibly with any camera, seems to be something to do with sudden LCD switching (CRT's that have persistence softened strobing).
I had previously used 30fps, so was shocked by the strobe / flicker effect of 25fps.
I have settled on a shutter angle of 240 degrees, which is sharp for static subjects and minimises strobing due to some added blur. I also pan as slow as possible. When tracking a subject attention is on the subject, not the moving background - I've been seeing strobing on many recent TV dramas of strobing backgrounds - which I hadn't noticed before! - now I know what to look for!
*I think for some reason the blur on this camera is not that great (even at 360 degrees) - and this may be the reason for some observed strobing.
Traditional film running at 24fps, that use a spinning disk to project, result in each frame sliding out and into view, rather than the whole frame being replace suddenly - as with digital.
From what I have seen of NX1 footage it seems blacks are crushed, it has a more video look, and is less filmic that the GH4 is capable of, also the codec still has limited support, and takes ages to convert. So I'm living with the stuttery EVF and rear-monitor, the GH4 seems to still be the best money to performance balance at present.
Another thing that bugs me is the audio is out of sync - I have to use a sample delay of 1500ms on every clip to delay the audio!!
I would be interested to know if you have since found a replacement brand of camera that runs smooth to your satisfaction at 25fps?
