Has it really ever done well? Maybe it has, but not in my memory. My perception, rightly or wrongly has been that it has been an R&D / brand builder extension of it's much more profitable medical optic devices division.

Considering the huge losses a number of years ago, which may not have been caused by, but is certainly correlated with, the huge numbers of PEN models being bargain and clearance priced.... and the subsequent improvement of Oly's financial situation since the EM-5... I think Oly has improved.

I don't think it would be a sound strategy to go back to cheap no-profit PEN-PM models and over production coupled with clearance blow out pricing of models within 1 year of release.
