Canon SL1/100d vs Canon Powershot A620 - image quality

Hello everyone.

I recently acquired a Canon 100d after much research. The idea was to get a budget / beginners DSLR and "graduate" to a level higher. I have been very happy with my Canon Powershot A620 for almost 9 years. The Powershot A620 took tack sharp photos in beautifully rendered colours everytime.

Both cameras were bought due to the "highly recomended" / "DP Review Gold" awards they won in their respective categories in their respective years on this website. My expectation was that I will be blown away by the upgrade. The reality however is slightly different.

Whilst the 100d does perform well in certain situations (landscapes, portraits etc), for certain scenes the focusing is not perfect. Scenes with high contrast. This was never a problem with my Powershot A620. The Powershot always gave me well focused, tack sharp images.

I have been experimenting with various shooting modes, shooting RAW, auto/manual focus etc. The results are the same. When the 100d focuses, images are brilliant, they beat the Powershot A620 (albeit by a small margin - the A620 is no slouch).

But sometimes the 100d does not focus so well and the images are very average. This despite me trying to focus multiple times on the same scene. I always focus using the view-finder.

What is happening here? How the hell is the A620 in some cases beating the 100d in IQ? Am I doing something wrong? It cant be - the 100d seems to get rave reviews everywhere and people are talking about the excellent optics of the kit lens.

I have attached some sample images. In one image, you can see a window air conditioner near the top right hand corner. The A620 ias bought everything into focus, not the 100d. The second photo is of a wall unit at home. Again the same problem - the whole picture is not as eell focused as the A620.

Am lost and frustrated. People, please help. Thanks in advance,

Mohan

Play area Canon 100d - notice the upper right air window air conditioner out of focus

Everything is tack sharp focus A620

Notice the trolley bottom right and the scene in general is not well focused -  100d

Notice how everything is in tack sharp focus A620
