I've bought and returned two SX60's now, and am still trying to figure out why the results . . .
I'm hoping others who are using/ have used the SX60 will let me know whether or not they've had the same issue. Maybe I was just unlucky enough to get two cameras with defective IS systems?
I bought the same cameras within three weeks of each other in Canada, and had exactly the same experience with the IS on the SX60. Received the SX60 in mid-October. I was happy with the resulting long telephoto images on a tripod, but trying to use it handheld at the same settings was an exercise in total frustration. While the viewfinder image in the SX50 would float around smoothly, even at 50x optical and 4x digital zoom, the image in the SX 60 would be extremely jittery. Using the Frame Assist Lock button would eliminate most of the jitter, but the button was too flush with the barrel to find quickly. With any kind of glove on, it is not possible to feel it. Panning the camera with the Frame Assist Lock button pressed resulted in viewfinder images that would alternate between jittery and somewhat smooth.
I mailed the SX60 back after a week and have ordered another one from a different vendor. It should arrive mid-December.
Thanks for weighing in, hope you have better luck with the next copy. Please let us know (if possible) how the new camera performs.

Well, the second SX60 arrived 10 days ago, just in time for a week of -20C weather. When it finally warmed up to 0C, I took the camera out together with the SX50. The IS in the second SX60 appeared to be marginally better than the first one I bought. There was still more jitter in the images than I was prepared to deal with, so it's going back as well. Feeling pretty dissappointed right now. At least the SX50 is okay.
The serial number of the second camera is 892050002670.
The exif data says "Firmware version 1.00", "Revision 1.00 rev 2.00"

Going to wait until some stores close by have the SX60 to try before buying another one.

Thanks for reporting back, Randy. I don't know what the serial numbers were on the two cameras I had, but the firmware exif data from photos I took with the second one read the same as yours. Very disappointing that Canon doesn't seem to be addressing this issue.
