I will try to look at the sounds of the 18-55 and the 55-200 but in the mean time, here are measurements of the shutter lag I just made on older film cameras I still have. The oldest of the lot is the LeicaIIIC and it has the shortest lag at 40ms. The '70s vintage cameras are the Olympus OM-1 and the Pentax SPF and their lag is 50ms.  The recent XE1 wins with a glorious 280ms. Astounding! I love the XE1 but I would love it better if its lag performance matched what I was used to get from film cameras.

I am using SonasoundP from SourceForge but this is Alpha software.  Other sound analysis programs are SonicVisualiser and Audacity.

Here are the data,

Shutter lag of the LeicaIIIC. Camera set at 1/4 s but pretty old and no longer precise.

Shutter lag of the Olympus OM-1. Camera set at 1/4s.

Shutter lag of the Pentax SPF.  Camera set at 1/2s.
