After reading this part more carefully, it strikes me that you probably have red-eye reduction activated. This is a very thorough red-eye preflash that causes lag - making it unpractical as you are observing. If you set the flash to the basic bolt setting (not slow sync or red-eye reduction), you should find the lag almost impossible to detect. Be sure to use focus assist for low light (no reason to turn that off).
