There are many ways to skin this cat.

First of all, you should look at what you need in your macro photography:

1. Focal length + Magnification: There is a 5x option in the canon 65mm several 90-100mm options

2. Image stabilization.

3. A versatile prime for other purposes too. 100mm f/2.8 is lovely

4. Extension tubes. - better for wider lenses (50mm) no quality loss

5. Diopter filters - better for longer lenses some quality loss.

6. Kit lenses with front element removed (Yes this works !) and it's probably the cheapest!
