[Nikon 18-300/3.5-6.3] or [Tamron 18-270/3.5-6.3] on S5

Mainly finding an all-in-one travel lens for my "new" Fujifilm S5 Pro. (newly bought 2nd hand, Nikon F-mount, DX format)

For such long range lenses, we cannot expect too much on image quality. But I am a pixel sniffing person (OMG)

Basically I have 3 candidates:

(A) Nikon : AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR

(B) Tamron : 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD

(C) Sigma : 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM / DC MACRO HSM

These include the major brands. However I am open for any more interesting candidates you suggest

For the (C) Sigma one, its MTF is 0.2 to 0.5 worse that the other two. While resolution is one of the major concerns, I will compare Nikon vs. Tamron first.

However, (C) Sigma wins at:

  • Made In Japan (Both A and B Made In China)

(I know solely comparing MTF is superficial. That is why I am requesting comments from real users here

(A) Nikon wins (B) Tamron in the followings:

  • Full Time Manual focus (wont break it by blocking its rotation)
  • 50mm longer range (in 35mm equivalent)
  • 18mm lock switch at left thumb position
  • slightly larger magnification ratio (0.29x vs 0.26x)
  • For some reasons I have better warranty coverage on Nikon products
  • Official brand for Nikon cameras (is it better?)

(B) Tamron wins (A) Nikon in the followings:

  • Smaller (74.4*96.4mm vs. 78.5*99mm) less blocking the flash
  • Lighter (450g vs. 550g)
  • Distance scale marked on focusing ring, and rotates while AF (more mechanical feeling and I feel Nikon AF focus is faster than AF-S as it rotates, is it really faster?)
  • Zoom ring is closer and focus ring is further (I like this arrangement)
  • cheaper (HK local price 3050 vs. 4620)

(A) Nikon fairs (B) Tamron:

  • Both MTF are cool
  • Both use the same direction of Nikon's zoom and focusing rings

(Points are arranged in importance descending order.)

If you are a user of one of them, may I know the compatibility of them on Fujifilm S5? Such as AF, VR, Focal Length data, Lens Distortion correction, etc.

Thanks for all your inputs.
