650D, 18-55mm STM - Depth of Field issue or??

I shot this Thanksgiving day with my 650D and 18-55mm STM at 35mm, 1/160, f/5.6, ISO 800, RAW converted in DPP with some USM and no NR. Center focusing point focused on woman's face, then recomposed (only a small amount). I see her face with good sharp detail, the left-side person not so much. The rwo other people somewhere in between.

Does f/5.6 not give a great enough depth of field to get all those faces sharp? They look quite close to the same distance from the camera to me. Or is that lens simply not really sharp across its field of coverage? Or?

Image 1 is full frame, 2 and 3 are 100% crops. No other processing.
