I have been a longtime fan of their Lux line, but the recent iteration took if off track, in my opinion (a phenomenal camera, but for people who are much more dedicated to the photographic process - see my "rant" at www.dpreview.com/forums/post/54597333). So, I decided to try G7X.
I love this camera. It takes great-quality pictures. The lens is fast, sharp and has shallow enough depth allowing for portraits - you cannot do that with your phone camera. The extended zoom and large enough sensor helps that. The controls are very comfortable and logical. Touchscreen makes things much more convenient. It allows you to instantly see the details of the shot with just a swipe. By pointing to the area of screen you can direct the autofocus.
The camera is easily pocketable and starts up fast making it very convenient to always carry around. The built-in flash is also quite fine. The build is solid.
There are a couple of areas where they could have done better. Focusing, although fast, can be more precise - sometimes it seems it does not really work - but that is easily mitigated by using touchscreen. Once you point to where you want the focus to be, the camera finds right focus. The writing time is a little too long. Finally, the battery life may be a little short for people taking over 200 pics/day - not a problem for me.
If I had to compare to the previous models of Lux, the main thing for me there was Leica optics which (an opinion) has an unmatched color rendition, especially in Leica-branded cameras. Somebody with enough time on their hands can probably fix it with photoshop, but not me. Their focusing also seemed a little better. However, for me G7X clearly wins in being pocketable for comparable image quality, having a flash, and a touchscreen which allows you do more things. Did I mention the price?
