I've been lurking on this board for a while and have found it to be one of the best out there. I just got my coolpix 5000 as a father's day present and I must admit I'm hooked on digital photography now. I took this picture of my wife and daughter this weekend, and it was not possible to use the tripod to get it. As such, the picture is slightly off balance. I've rotated a little, but couldn't rotate any further without cropping off the top of my wife's head. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to rotate this picture further without cropping of her head.

Any help would be appreciated.

Second question: What did I do wrong? I thought the image would be embedded.

Ok,

I think I've got something that will work for you. Hopefully you have photoshop.

The problem here is that any rotation is going to create some empty space in the corners, as well as push out some picture data from the frame (in this case her head). The first thing you need to do is change the rotation orientation of the picture, from the center to the lower left corner. This will keep you from loosing her head when you rotate. Then you need to add a little more trees in the upper right to fill the new blank space and finally crop.

Here is what I did:

1) Change your canvas size to give you a little more room above her head. Add 50-75 pixels on top.

2) Copy the image layer then flip it vertically. Then Shift+Move it up to the top so that you have an upside down image sitting directly on top of the original.
This will give the extra trees you need in top right.

3)Merge Visible Layers.

4) Drag a guide down to help orient the horz line of the fountain bowl.

5) Ctrl-T (transform) then move the rotation axis to left corner. Then grab outside one of the corners and rotate till the bowl lines up on the guide.

6) Crop just between the tops of her heads.

That looks pretty good to me. You could fake the trees in a couple of other ways, but I think this is hardest to tell.

I tried it the easiest way I know.

Make a duplicate layer. Leave it alone and:

Go to Edit, Transform, Distort, and pull the upper right edge up a little until the photo looks straight. Hit Enter. Then to Layer, Flatten. That's it.
In fact, I overdid it slightly.

Bryan and Muriel, thank you so much for the tips. I will try them both out as soon as I rebuild my computer. Something in my machine went unhappy on me last night as I was editing some fireworks pics, so I decided to rebuild with raid 1 so as not to risk losing my new photographs (they're becomming an obsession should I be worried?).

I knew some PS gurus out there could help :)
