Re: GH4 video judder/strobing - it's dreaded 3:2 pulldown!

...ok I think you have the answer.

It seems my LCD screens run at 60hz refresh (as do most out there!), computer LCD's, LCD TV's, and the LCD monitor on the GH4.

For a 60hz screen to display 24fps it requires 3:2 pulldown:

show frame 1, 2 times

show frame 2, 3 times, then the same pattern -

show frame 3, 2 times, etc. This is the stutter/judder I am seeing! A horrid kind of '1/3rd 2/3rds' stutter.

At 30fps the frames are displayed with equal length, 2 frames of each, no judder, silky smooth.

It seems the only way to view 24fps without judder, is in a cinema with a DCP (digital cinema projector), or with a 120Hz TV - which yes more and more people are buying, through the amount of 120Hz TV's in the world is still relatively minor.

Blu-Ray standard is 24fps. So I presume many many people are running into the issue (not just from the GH4!!).

Even in a PAL country, where 25fps is standard, this still requires pulldown on a 60Hz display.

How then are the swathes of great TV dramas now filmed with such smooth pans? Are they delivered at 30fps?

My main delivery from the next project I am about to start, is online, but also Blu-Ray, with the possibility of DCP!!  If it were to be just online, I might opt to film at 29.97/30fps, but with the potential of Blu-Ray (and perhaps DCP) - I'm heading towards 24fps - which means most people will see the footage as juddery!
