Re: GH4 video judder/strobing - a solution

...ok many thanks for that, the effect sounds close to what I and others are seeing, the judder is I estimate 4 - 6 times a second, not 24 times a second.

I also read that it was an issue with early models of the GH series, compared to say Canon. It maybe Panasonic's choice of codec key-frame rate, who knows?

I have a college who masters films for various commercial formats, include digital cinema projection (DCP), 24fps is THE standard, using anything else apparently enters into 'frame-rate conversion hell'!

Of course we may use any frame rate we choose for our own purposes, but when it comes to distribution 24fps is pretty much the only choice.

This is what he said, and he is right in the business -

'stick to 24fps (HD) as it covers the most mediums. 25fps is OK but your restricted to PAL (SD) outcomes whereas 24fps can be used for DCP, Blu-ray, DVD (speed change for PAL), web and looks better projected. If a PAL version is needed then a simple speed change and down-res is done. He can shoot at 29.97 but he'd be entering frame rate conversion hell getting it back to 24fps.'

Yet to my eyes the juddery GH4 24fps output does as you say - induce sea sickness when panning! Perhaps my hopes that the GH4 could be used professionally for film have been dashed?

The reams of impressive Vimeo footage from the GH4 mainly are static viewpoint tripod shots, no panning.  Yes this works, but is very restrictive, and hides the limitation of the GH4's 24fps.

I shall carry out another day of testing tomorrow, I just hope I can hit upon a solution!
