GX7, GH4, Custom ("C1" "C2" etc.) dial - am I missing something?

From the User Guide/Manual and from experimentation, it seems that the only way to set up Custom dial settings (C1, C2, etc.) is as follows:

1. Set Mode dial to stills or video (in my case M and Mvid).

2. Input the settings you want to assign to C1, C2, etc.

3. Assign the settings.

4. Now reset all the settings to how you want them when you are not using the Custom setting.

Needless to say, this is a total pain in the posterior.  To make any change to C dial (C1, C2, etc.) I have to go to the regular (M) dial, make the change, add it to the C1 (or C2, etc.), then put it back the way it was on the regular (M) dial.  Since shoot a lot of both stills and video, this becomes a 4-phase process (change/unchange stills, change/unchange vid) for each desired customization.  Very inefficient, and very hard to do in the field with bright light rendering the LCD useless for the task.

I have tried simply turning the dial to C1 (C2, etc.) to input changes, but this doesn't seem to work.  Even though it would make total sense, and save needless steps.

Is this really the only way to do this, or am I missing something?
