In America the lens retails at $1,500 BUT in the UK it's listed at £1,300?

$1,500 = £950.

Why is a £350 premium being applied in the UK?

What's the problem ordering from the US?

Ordering from the US you will need to pay the VAT, which will be charged on the total cost including the purchase price and the delivery fee. The tax paying process also incurs a VAT handling charge. And this charge is also taxable so you will need to pay VAT for the effort of the tax collectors dealing with the item.

Recently at work we imported a small experimental single-board computer. The total tax on something costing $300 inc. delivery was £50.

So you may end up with a tax bill of over £200. The delivery charge with insurance (you'd probably want it insured) could be quite high (I don't know for sure). So in the end the savings will unlikely be worth the 1. lack of warranty service (Olympus has stopped doing global warranties) and 2. difficulty of addressing minor problems like lens not being properly centered.

I don't know if import duty is charged for lenses.
