If you have trouble with distant targets, try switching to portrait mode. When it is a small target moving very quickly (especially ones moving only in a horizontal direction), I find the camera focuses and tracks much better in portrait mode. The attached is an example of a kestrel migrating south and flying extremely quickly on the thermals. While the photo is not of great quality, its purpose was just to be able to document the hawk was a kestrel and not a merlin for bird migration counts (click 100% to verify that it was a kestrel). It was in view for less than 3 seconds. I had tried earlier with other kestrels with the horizontal frame and was not able to achieve focus lock. With somewhat larger targets that have more height, I don't have the same problem.

Interesting! Thanks for that tip--more portrait mode. I guess if you're going to be forced to go in portrait mode to get the best focusing, a format that is closer to square is an advantage.
