Recording video in low light with Canon EOS 700D

Hi,

I'd be really grateful if someone could answer the below...

I've just bought a canon EOS 700D (+ EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM) for shooting video in low light situations (eg bars, night clubs). These vids will be shown full screen on a website.

When I was testing it with my tripod in my living room at night with the lights on (very soft light) using the automatic A+ mode, it seemed surprisingly a bit grainy, so I stuck it on manual and dropped the ISO a notch.

The resulting video was very dull and dim.

Basically, all the tutorials I've read so far say make sure you use "manual" mode and control your own ISO - preferably no higher than 1600. But no matter what I do in "manual", even if I notch up the ISO to 6400 the video still looks better in Auto mode.

So my questions are these:

1) Is there something I'm missing in Manual mode?

2) Does setting custom White Balance make a difference?

3) Would a different or better lens help?

4) Do I actually need to get a camera with a bigger sensor? (ie go up to the next level of canons - EOS 60D or EOS 70D)

I just thought I would get a clearer picture so need to know if I'm doing something wrong.

Many thanks!

Dan

(Ps I'm not panning or moving the shot around, just fixed video shots).
