Having IBIS is suppose to help us save on lenses, at least that is what folks would say before I switched to Pentax.
That's not the main reason. Maybe you missed the fact that you can use IBIS with any of the thousands of pre-digital-age k-mount lenses. That's what it's for.
If you're the kind of person who puts price above everything else, maybe you should delve into the used lens market. They all magically become IBIS lenses with a Pentax DSLR.
I understand that fact that it works with all lenses. You are missing the point that a lens with features X, Y and Z should cost less than one with just X and Y.
I don't put price above everything, but I do like to get what I think is a good value. This is a slow lens and I feel, as well as others here, that it is over priced for what it delivers. With the discounts on the 20-40 right now it looks like a more attractive lens and can be had for less. Sigma 18-35 is only $50.00 more. It is $250.00 more than the Tarmron and Sigma 17-50 2.8s. Time will tell if it is a quality lens and deserves the price, but as of now it does not look like a good value for the dollar.
If you want to compare prices with Canon's 15-85 or Nikon's 16-85, that's fair and relevant. Comparing to fast and wide angle-only zooms from Pentax is meaningless.
How is it meaningless when they are cheaper or comparable in price?
Too me looking at lenses that are considered to be a higher tier for similar cost or less is relevant because it demonstrates that they are pricing the lens too high...
Now you will say but they aren't in the same range so it isn't apples to apples. Don't really care, life is about compromise and do you want to spend more on something with a little more reach or less on a lens that is faster. There is no right answer since everyone's priorities will be different, just expressing my opinion from a cost stand point. If they drop it by a few hundred like they are now on the 20-40 and the review are positive then my view will change.
How do you go about comparing the Sigma 10-20/3.5 to the Pentax DA 16-85? Right now, the Pentax is $100 more that will likely go away before too long.
It is the Pentax 20-40 which is cheaper than the 16-85. It is $696 at BH right now, which the last time I checked is less than $750 and the lens is not being discontinued already is it?????

I never said Sigma with the 20-40. That reference was for the 18-35 which is only $50.00 more.
You are making up convoluted stories. Two points: The DA 20-40 Ltd is on a short term sale. Come next Tuesday, it will cost about $1000. Second, you can't buy a DA 16-85 today so your "this point in time" price comparison has no meaning. Lastly, who's to say what the price of the DA 16-85 will be the next time there is a Pentax lens sale AND you can actually buy that lens?
Well I am done feeding the troll. No one else can have an opinion and there is no comparing it even to other lenses in the Pentax line up. I keep for getting the internet is full of...
You haven't provided any indication that you even have a Pentax camera and yet you're willing to call others "trolls" on a Pentax forum.
