I think I know what's wrong with the SX60
2

I just tried out an SX60 side-by-side with an SX50, and I think I know why most SX60 images at the long end looks so soft.

It the stabilization.

The SX60 has a lot of high-frequency jitter at the long end.

The SX50 is rock solid.

Both cameras were in IS continuous mode 1.

I went back and forth several times to be sure, and I looked at them both at about the same magnification (100x and 104x using digital zoom).  The difference was striking, and absolutely repeatable.

This explains why there are a few sharp shots, and why the shots taken in a test lab on a tripod are also sharp.

It would be interesting if someone that owns an SX60 could take some handheld shots at the long end of a test object, then repeat them with the camera on a tripod using the self timer to release the shutter and with IS turned off.
