1. Does the T5i's picture style settings impact its RAW files? Does it matter what it is set to if you are shooting RAW? Does the RAW file change because of the picture style selected? The T5i manual is unclear about it.

2. I use RAW and canon's DPP because the in camera JPEG pictures looked dull and soft. But now I wonder if just using one of the user predefined picture style settings might give me in camera JPEG files that look pretty good.

1) The answer is yes and no.

The camera stores the meta data for the changes in the raw file (and applies it to the embedded jpegs). DPP knows how to apply this meta data and uses it a the starting point for processing.

Other post processing engines e.g. Adobe Camera Raw ignore this meta data and begin processing from the basic raw image.

This is most obvious if you shoot with the monochrome picture style. Open it with DPP and you will open a monochrome image (which you can revert to colour by adjusting the picture style settings). Open it in Bridge (for Photoshop) and you will see a colour image which you can then convert to monochrome.

2) The answer is quite possibly provided you are willing to accept the limitations of camera processed jpegs.

Hope this helps

+1 to Q1: the Picture Style selected is stored in the RAW file, but it isn't a permanent application and can be changed to any other picture style in DPP, and can be ignored in other processors.

WRT Q2: There are user adjustments in-camera that can be applied to the selected Picture Style to make the output more to your liking. See "Customizing Image Characteristics," pp. 132-134 of the T5i/700D instruction manual. These will be applied to the in-camera JPG. Like Picture Style, these tweaks are stored in the RAW file as a default or starting point, but can be overridden in DPP and other processors.

Thanks guys.  I will have to play with it to see if the pictures will pre-adjust the settings in DPP (starting point) to what I would have used anyway.  Might make batch processing more appealing.

I think most of my T5i pictures were taken only because I needed to play with a camera feature.  Mostly of the dog since she can't say no or glare at the camera operator.

DOF/focusing experiment. In camera JPEG, Normal Picture Style
