Unfortunately, Bassy, my hasty hyphotesis didn't confirm: it's Ken's outstanding skill ONLY
You can quickly check it for yourself: search in the Ed's gallery his bald eagle portrait; download it (I hope Ed doesn't mind because I didn't ask for his permission); put the Ken's bald eagle beside the saved image at the same scale: although the Ed's one is taken at ISO 200, it's much better, no washed out feathers, less noise, all we incessantly talked about since SX60 came out.
All the best,
Augustin
Hi Augustin
I have seen Ed's work and it is fantastic. He has mastered not only the SX50 but photography in general. I enjoy viewing all his posts and they have added so much to this forum. I also enjoy your posts as well. Your skills are super also. So thanks to both of you.
I have seen Ed's eagle as well. It clearly has way more detail then mine posted here. Simply a better image for sure. There is something you need to be careful of though. Anytime when comparing images, things need to be very very equal. First off my shot is over exposed explaining some of white feather detail lost. Ed's eagle also is shot at 83mm. This may be a sharper focal length. My shot is at full zoom, already known to be the least sharp area of most zooms. We don't know the distance we stood at, when taking the shot, I was about 40ft.
So there is no doubt that Ed's shot is fantastic like most of Ed's shots posted here. Also you are right in saying it is a better shot. I couldn't agree more. Keep in mind though, to just be slightly more careful when helping others, that it is a real apples to apples comparison. You have helped many in the past. I respect and appreciate all of this. Augustin I want to say, please do not take this in anyway other then a sincere helpful manner.
Now that being said, I am not saying the SX60 produces better IQ overall or at full zoom when compared to the SX50. I would never make such a broad statement like that. The SX60 has its issues, we all know that. I don't think anyone has tried the SX60 at 1200mm yet, although I don't think it will make much difference.
The SX60 sensor is very different then the SX50. We know it produces more noise. On the other hand, we haven't really explored the benefit the extra resolution can bring to the table yet. Or where is the SX60's sweet spot for IQ settings are, or even the focal length sweet spot. My point is that the SX60 has its negatives like all cameras do. It also has its positives, that we have not brought to light yet. Remember, the SX50 was heavily criticized early on also, when frequently compared to the SX40.
So I know you are a very helpful and generous person. We can't begin to measure what you have brought to this forum. Just proceed with caution. You don't want to discourage anyone from a camera that might turn out to be the right one for them latter on.
To this day, there are those who still are strongly convinced that their choice to stay with the SX40 instead of the SX50, was the right move. Hey maybe they are the ones that are right. My SX40 was sharper then my SX50 many times.
The SX30,40,50 are all great cameras with different personalities. The SX60 is the new kid on the block. Lets see if it can earn its respect like the others. Maybe it will fail, time will tell.
So..., thanks for taking the time to post here. It is a great forum, you and Ed are a big part in making it great.
Ken
Thank you very much, Ken, for taking time to write such a detailed and excellent answer! I'm sure the SX60 sensor is different, because although it produces more noise at low ISO, at high ISO is better, as your eagle outstanding image proves (that of ISO 1600). Like many people here, I've expected from SX60, well, otherwise, like more zoom and less button and feature innovations.
I thank you very much for the valuable compliment of comparing me to Ed, and, I want to say, to yourself, but I've only LEARNED from Ed, you and many people here, whom I'm grateful to, but I'm just a hobbyist and basically I like a more straightforward camera.
Thus I got for the moment also a P600, which I'm struggling to learn, because although I had a P510, that is much more, not only a "real" (i.e. starting from 24mm equiv.) 60X optical zoom.
Happy shooting,
Augustin
