Canon G7 X macro - maximum magnification
2

Since I can't find any information about maximum magnification of the G7 X, I did quick test myself today. I shot at f/5.6, tried to keep the ruler as straight as possible in the same plane, manually focusing to the lowest possible distance. As you can see, the field curvature is strong at such close distances and it's the compromise of this compact lens design.

It's interesting that you can get the highest 0.25x magnification not at the widest angle but in middle of the range. The camera doesn't display it's focal length, but while zooming you get indication of the current possible focusing range. Zoom in carefully until it change to 10cm-infinity and then zoom back out one step (or until it shows 5cm-infinity, or the equivalent in inches).

The 1″ sensor has dimensions of 13.2 x 8.8 mm, I measure the across the width:

86mm at wide angle of 24mm equiv., 13.2 / 86 = 0.153x

53mm at mid range of 42mm equiv., 13.2 / 53 = 0.249x (FYI widest aperture here is f/2.5)

140mm at telephoto of 100mm equiv., 13.2 / 140 = 0.094x

86mm at wide angle of 24mm equiv., 13.2 / 86 = 0.153x

53mm at mid range of 42mm equiv., 13.2 / 53 = 0.249x

140mm at telephoto of 100mm equiv., 13.2 / 140 = 0.094x
