Hi Carsten,

Hello Mark,

If you purchase a 603N system, it comes with a transmitter and receiver, correct?

Yes, two Transmitter/Receiver alone, or with the 10-PIN Terminal Cable.

You place the transmitter on the camera and the receiver on the flash, correct?

Yes, both are the same Transmitter and Receiver.

With this system, when you take a picture the flash will fire, but if you want to trip the shutter wirelessly (say you're standing 10 ft away from the camera), then what do you need? An additional 603N system?

No, You need the 10-PIN Terminal Cable and two Transmitter/Receiver.
You must mount the Receiver on the Camera Flash-Shoe and connect the 10-PIN Terminal Cable with the Camera Connector.

The same manufacturer now makes a manual flash that has a receiver built into it. In this case, can you use the unused receiver to trip the shutter?

All what You need are two Receiver/Transmitter (that means two identical YONGNUO RF-603N) and the Connection Cable for the Camera. In my Case the 10-PIN Terminal Cable for Nikon.
