EOS M2 - original M update
2
Actually I have EOS M2, but since this camera is not listed by DPreview (it was released on certain, mostly Asian markets) this is the only place I could squeeze my review in ... it is almost the same camera as original M but with Wi-Fi built in and improvements to AF speed (or so is Canon claiming).
Basically at close out prices (Oct 2014) this camera makes some sense if someone is looking for a pocketable and inexpensive camera. It is well built and small enough with 22mm pancake lens to consider it a replacement for a compact camera. Unfortunately this is about the only clear thing about it ... form factor advantage. Everything else is somewhat quirky ... and the list is quite long.
- Image noise levels are quite high ... even at ISO 400 shadow areas start displaying color blotches.
- AF with 22mm is quite slower than competition ... barely usable I would say and lens keep hunting in low light.
- I have used their compacts in the past and was expecting excellent user interface experience, but M2 feel a bit short in this respect. It seems like some limitations were built-in on purpose and unfortunately options to customize the camera are very limited. Examples?
- For general photography there is no useful function to be assigned to video RECORD button ... it just sits there doing nothing ... instead of being a CUSTOM F1 button.
- You can choose to have AF with MF override but ... alas, engaging MF provides no magnified view to help with focus adjustments ... You can manually engage magnified view by 5x or 10x but it will remain at that setting until picture is taken (making composition corrections virtually impossible) ... very poorly implemented and possibly only usable for macro-tripod photography.
- Even when exposure compensation is accessible from touch screen basic overly it lacks AEB bracketing extension ... which can only be engaged from MENU and is limited to just 3 exposures. And You have to constantly repeat as turning camera OFF will reset that setting (even if it keeps negative or positive exposure comp. in memory).
- No way to rearrange QUICK menu functions ... even some Canon compacts a few years back were providing such an option ... to select favorite functions and place them in specific places (within margins) on the screen ... DOH
- ... it feels that EOS M2 is seriously let down by so many of these small shortcomings which if they were better thought out and implemented could unleash this camera full potential ... instead of that ... it just feels crippled most of the time. The funny part is ... most of that could be easily fixed via firmware update, but Canon seems little concerned about that (unlike Fujifilm)
