I'm surprised the 603 needs modification.

Yes, the RF-603N must be "Armed" before You can Shoot with the X-A1.

My 602s work just fine with my X-A1.

Thank You for the Information.

.... or you could buy just one single 603C II to sit atop of camera which will trigger all your 603N's. No modification necessary with the 603C's. At least this is my finding anyway.

OK, sounds good, My modification cost around € 2.

I realize the 603s are a different setup than the 602s so of course there could be differences in how they perform on "third party" cameras.  That was one of the reasons I gravitated towards getting a Fuji was that I'd read that the wireless triggers I have for my Nikons (for my real estate shooting) would work on the X-A1 and it's true.  The sync speed is pretty low, though, which people over on Strobist tell me is a downside of the 602s but was rectified on the 603s.

I can sync my off-camera strobes at 1/200 with my Nikon DSLRS but only about 1/140 with my 602s on my X-A1.
