So I shot the sunrise and critters instead

Love these! The color is gorgeous. Nice job!

For me, the third is too close of a crop losing some of the surroundings that would give it more impact. The first and second I like the scenes but would process them differently. The noise reduction in the first eliminates the detail in the trees that should still be there but becomes smeared. The second I like but would lighten the foreground. Remember this is a personal reaction and different people will see these differently. You need to please yourself! There are no glaring errors here so it boils down to personal preference.

I will be reworking the first with selective noise reduction like I used on the second.

Don't you think the second should, at least, have the board walk cropped out in the lower left foreground?

I don't mind the boardwalk. All personal. If I were going to eliminate it I would be more inclined to clone it out than crop. Again, personal.

Hi all,

I am replying to my own thread with three more pictures taken from the plane last night, one of which (the last one) raises some questions...please see below!

Best regards,

Jeff

This one shows the airplane wing, along with Ursa Major.

A somewhat cleaner image (in terms of reflections) than some of the others. As before, you need to zoom in to see the stars well.

This picture shows a long curved streak (along with some reflections). I have no idea what this is. I have greatly brightened the image to make it easier to see the streak.

Well, to me this is photography : except for some of the skies that were interesting in themselves, each scene could have been ordinary, but they have been shot in a certain way, and a series of decisions were made and aesthetic choices that made them photography. What I like about them is that they have a particular quality in common : they could all be the opening shot of a movie - they are powerful enough that they tell a story in one glance.
Well 3eCheval, you have gone straight in as a new member of my Platinum Club. It normally takes lots of compliments from a new poster to achieve that status but this sort of flattery opens doors.

That kid has got huuuge eyes.

What a great expression you've caught in the 2nd.

I had a play with the OOC and thought you'd like to see the result!
I opened them side by side on two monitors. The things I mostly notice is that you have muted the colors even more than my rework. You didn't crop as much as I did. And you lightened up the foreground.

A question I need to understand the answer to:

Doesn't lightening the foreground bring the viewers eye down to that corner which is not where you --

I didn't change the crop (at least not intentionally) I downloaded your OOC image and just left the crop unchanged. I processed the picture as if I hadn't seen yours - I was curious to see the difference. So much of this is just personal taste and preference and there is no single right answer. I thought you'd enjoy seeing a slightly different 'take'.

I think the problem is you've lowered the blacks too much. That, coupled with the increase in the clarity slider has resulted in what in what I called 'too contrasty'. It's a landscape full of colour and contrast already and that black slider is way too far to the left for my taste.

I haven't tried this on a plane window, but I have used it when shooting through other windows to block reflections.

It's come in handy for hotel windows and observatories. It might be easier than using pillows and blankets. :-)

I have a night flight coming up next month, so I think I'll give this a try.

And, of course, I did. I just ask questions to better understand what you are trying to show me.

I had cropped the original image and am trying to decide if that was a mistake.

O.K. Thanks for the clarification.

I guess the bread achieved the goal of attracting birds, but I don't think the bread enhances the images.

Some of those birds look like sparrows, but what kind of bird was the first with the yellow coloring?

Excellent Michael.
