Newbie question about T5 Camera shutter button pause

Hi alll, my friend just bought a Canon T5 camera and has been experiencing a shutter control issue/problem. This may or may not really be a problem. When he goes to take a picture, he presses the shutter button down and the camera focuses on the subject. He then has to press the shutter button further to finally take the picture. This may sound incredibly simple or just a newbie type question but is there a way to setup the camera to avoid this pre-focus process? Incidentally he uses the live view which might be part of the issue. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
