I was under the impression that STM technology will ultimately make its way into L lenses, and honestly it's much much better and its still a new technology.

Also, they have been able to make pancakes BECAUSE of STM, so expect to see much shorter primes (35, 50, 85) aswell. You obviously can't have a 85mm pancake, but any "length" the USM motor took up will be shortened by STM implementation. As you get to longer focal lengths the benefit is much less unless you move into DO + STM. That is where the future is: smaller, lighter, faster-focusing lenses.
