Dare to Repair

My daughter-in-law gave me a Rebel TSI that she says was diagnosed at a camera shop as having an auto-focus problem, and therefore would not work.  When I switched to MF on the Canon kit lens (18-55), I was able to take photos.  She has a Tamron AF 70-300 4-5.6 lens that she says is shot.  When I set the Tamron lens on MF and the camera on MF, I was able to take a photo.  If you have any experience that relates or can offer guidance as to next steps (in addition to enjoying as is) I would appreciate it.  I will have to get another Canon 18-55 or whatever I chose, since she plans to keep the old one as a back-up for her new Rebel T3.  I don't believe she ever used the old or new camera on anything setting other than auto to take photos.   I have Canon G11 and Canon SX40 (and did have Pentax DSLR), but I would enjoy and use the TSI I mentioned here. Thanks for any comments.
