Are large pixels a gimmick?

large pixels not a gimmick for very low exposures

bobn2 is right about being able to compare the noise without needing to downsample the photos if we have a proper way to present them at the same image size. Viewed this way we can see that the best large pixel cameras have an advantage when the exposure is so low that it approaches the level of the read noise. Just taking a darker area of the comparison image that bobn2 used shows this:
