Only the E-M1, and only for C-AF and legacy Four Thirds lenses.

Not quite. It uses it with native MFT lenses in S-AF too. We just don't know precisely for what purpose yet. See here:

Based on that behavior, I'd be inclined to suggest that it's getting an estimate of delta-focus distance—initial estimation of how much it needs to change focal distance and in what direction.
