First time tripod purchase - Ball head <US$250 Recommendations?

Hello all, I'm looking for a good tripod with a ball head somewhere in the total price range of US$150-250 to support a Canon 60D, a 70-200 f4.0L lens, a 1.4X Extender and/or in combination with a future 100-400 L-series lens. I have been looking at tripods made by Manfrotto, Oben, and Sirui and like what these brands have to offer.  The only local brands that a dealer has in stock is Manfrotto, so this is the only brand that I can actually lay hands on.

I may wind up using the tripod only 4-5 times per year for either informal family portraits, landscape/wildlife photography, and or celestial photography. Aluminum is fine for me as I don't anticipate carting the tripod around in a backpack. I would like a nice, STURDY tripod that will support the above camera/lens packages without being shaky or tipsy.  I really can't see spending >US$250 for something that I'm only going to use infrequently.

What are some good tripod models to look at in this price range either by these manufacturers or others? Any suggestions or advice for a first time tripod purchaser would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
